About Us

Each month hundreds of animals enter the Weatherford/Parker County Animal Shelter. Parker Paws was created by community volunteers to help support these animals.

Our goal is simple and humane: We work to increase pet adoptions and improve the quality of life for the animals in the shelter. This is done by aassisting the shelter staff, conducting offsite adoption events in the community, maintaining our Petfinder.com site of adoptable pets, socializing and grooming the shelter animals, fostering pets that are too young for adoption and/or need more time before being adopted, and raising funds for items needed at the shelter.

Our group is growing, with over 50 active volunteers. We assist in identifying potential service dogs from the shelter, help match senior citizens with furry companions, and take foster dogs to local assisted-living and community centers. We provide low-cost spay/neuter clinics for county residents. We rely completely on donations (which are tax-deductible) and volunteers.

Barb and Ginger Barbara Pursley, President of Parker Paws, has been a volunteer at the shelter since 1998. She lives in Parker County with her husband, Roy, and four cats. Ginger is a long-haired calico adopted from the shelter. She's the diva of the house and maintains reign over the others. Barbara vaguely recalls having other hobbies, but spends much of her time these days at the shelter or updating Petfinder with pictures of the adoptable animals.
