We'll also have an adoption event at the Peaster Mail Shack on Saturday, September 26 from 10am until 3pm. They are located in Peaster on FM920 about 9 miles from the
North Main and FM920 intersection in Weatherford.
Please stop by and visit with our adoptable pets. You may just find your new best friend!

Fostering
with Parker Paws Our volunteers took 10 more pets from the shelter
into foster care this month, providing them with more time to find a permanent home. Twelve of our fostered pets were adopted,
including Fiona, Shiloh, Peter, and Toby. There are still 23 foster pets in our
volunteers' homes. As soon as more are adopted, the
volunteers can take home others from the shelter. Your donations help us provide vet care
for these fosters.
Here
are some of our foster pets who are available for adoption now
with links to their Petfinder pages:

Maurices, a women's specialty retail business located in the Weatherford Marketplace shopping area, just south of the interstate at South Main Street, will be hosting a donation drive
to benefit the shelter pets this month. Please stop by with a donation of pet food or
other supplies (towels, kitty litter, bleach, laundry detergent) and support this worthy event.
Our thanks to all our donors this
month! You helped us purchase items for the shelter to care for the pets,
and also pay for vet care for our foster pets. We couldn't do this without you!
Parker Paws is a 501c3 (non-profit) organization and all donations are tax-deductible.

Hot Dog Trot
Our thanks to everyone who made our inaugural Hot Dog Trot a success! We had 172 registered runners, exceeding our expectations. Cora Turner, from Alvarado, came in first, followed closely by David Holtsford of Lipan. The complete 5K results are available at Run Time Racing. Photos are available at Movin' Pictures
Runners and walkers, 2-legged and 4-, enjoyed beautiful weather and a challenging course through the neighborhoods. Who knew Weatherford had so many hills?
Along with the 1K and 5K, visitors also enjoyed a Canine Costume Contest, demonstrations by dog trainer Butch Cappell and the precision 4H group: Parker Pack, and raffle drawings of over a hundred prizes. We had the mobile adoption trailer on display and adopted one of our foster pets.
All proceeds from the Hot Dog Trot benefit Parker Paws and the shelter animals. We want to thank Wright Chiropractic Health Center for coordinating the event and the sponsors and vendors who made it possible. Our major sponsors were The Weatheford Democrat, Parker County Kids Magazine, The Community News, First Financial Bank, Dillard Feed & Seed, Power House Gym, and IESI Corporation. We look forward to a bigger and better event for the community, and for the shelter animals, next year.
Training
Tip for September
Does your dog know his name? Or have you adopted an older dog and given him a new name? A great way to teach a dog his name is to associate it with "good stuff". To teach your dog that his name is valuable, start in a quiet area. Hide 20-30 very small, yummy treats in your pocket or hand. Wait until the dog gives you eye contact (be patient). The instant he gives you eye contact, say his name, then within 2 seconds give him a treat. Repeat until the treats are gone. At first, say his name only after he makes eye contact, not before. The eye contact will start to happen more quickly, once the dog figures out "the game", which is by looking at you he will be training you to give him a treat. Play this game for about 5 minutes a day. After just a few days your dog will be whipping his head around when you say his name. This is a simple bonding game to "play" a few times a week for the rest of his life.
