Mobile Adoptions
We held two mobile adoptions in September, finding homes for 7 pets (including several who had been waiting for months).
In October come join us at Teskey's on the 10th, Petsmart on the 17th, and at the shelter for a special Halloween promotion on the 31st. For details, check our events page.

Fostering
with Parker Paws Our volunteers took 7 more pets from the shelter
into foster care this month, providing them with more time to find a permanent home. Thirteen of our fostered pets were adopted,
including Bonnie, Bailey, and Ivy. There are still 17 foster pets in our
volunteers' homes. As soon as more are adopted, the
volunteers can take home others from the shelter. Your donations help us provide vet care
for these fosters.
Here
are some of our foster pets who are available for adoption now

Our thanks to all our donors this
month! You helped us purchase items for the shelter to care for the pets,
and also pay for vet care for our foster pets. We couldn't do this without you!

   Adopt a Shelter Pet!
October is national Adopt a Shelter Pet month and in observation, the Weatherford/Parker County Animal Shelter is reducing all pet adoption fees by $20 this month. Adoption fees still include the spay/neuter, vaccinations, and a microchip. What a great deal for your new companion!
American State Bank Promotion
American State Bank is promoting non-profit organizations in the community with their Giving Back Campaign. They are offering $10,000 in prizes and Parker Paws is entered in the competition. How do we win? We need your votes! You may vote at the bank's location in Weatherford at 1300 Santa Fe Drive (across from Snow, Garrett & Company) or online at http://www.asbonline.com/givingback/. If you vote in their lobby it will count as two votes, but all votes are greatly appreciated. You may vote once a day at the bank and once a day online, from October 2 through 30. Please make yourself a daily reminder and share this with your friends. All funds enable us to continue our efforts of providing veterinarian services for pets fostered from the shelter (we've fostered over 130 pets this year to date), and allow us to provide the shelter with supplies to help care for the 100+ a week intake of pets. Thank you for supporting the shelter pets. Training
Tip for October
Does your dog take you for a walk? Here is a method that may help you teach your dog to walk on a loose leash. With a supply of small, yummy treats, begin training in an area of low distraction with your dog on a collar or harness and leash. Start walking, verbally encouraging your dog to follow. When he begins to pull, immediately stop. If he relaxes or looks at you, call him to you, take a couple steps, and REWARD. Start again and repeat the process. The first session may take 10 minutes, be patient and plan on spending time. On subsequent sessions, start rewarding for not pulling, even for only one step on a loose leash. As your dog improves, slowly build the number of steps and then work up to areas of higher distraction, possibly using yummier treats. Don't rush the lessons. With time and practice, your dog will learn "the game" and you both will enjoy walking together. One note of caution: Once you begin to teach your dog not to pull, you cannot allow him to go back to his old habit of pulling. Be consistent, that way he will learn to be consistent, rather than testing you to see if you will allow him to drag you.
